In this study, we aimed to investigate the reflux episodes using impedance-pH monitoring in patients with functional dyspepsia. Methods: A total of 21 consecutive adult patients (12 female, 9 male) with functional dyspepsia by Rome IV criteria were included in this study. Patients whose predominant symptom was typical reflux symptoms were excluded from the study. All patients underwent ambulatory 24-h pH-impedance monitoring off-therapy. Reflux episodes were identified and classified as acid with a pH < 4, weakly acidic with a pH 4-7, or weakly alkaline reflux with a pH > 7. Acid exposure time (AET) was considered abnormal when pH is < 4 in the distal esophagus above 6% over 24 h, and borderline between 4%-6%. Results: The median number of total reflux episodes was 51 (25th-75th percentile; 27-81). Four patients (19%) had pathological AET, and 1 patient (5%) had borderline AET. According to Rome IV criteria, %57 of the 21 patients included in the study had postprandial distress syndrome (PDS), %29 had epigastric pain syndrome (EPS), and %14 had an overlap. There was no difference between the three groups in the number of reflux episodes or the parameters of acid reflux (Table 1). Conclusions: Although the number of reflux episodes in patients with functional dyspepsia was inconclusive, esophageal baseline impedance and lower esophageal sphincter pressure were found to be within the normal limits. The reflux episodes by ph-impedance monitoring and reflux characteristics were not different between the subgroups of functional dyspepsia. ![]() Karacaer C, Aydin A, Acar S, Sadecolak M, Tozlu M, Uslan MI.
